I had recently revived the Wereju name for a number of gigs and recordings, feeling once again that pull to make some pure dark drone music. But never being one to trade on past glories I was never 100% comfortable with returning to the Wereju name. So I have now decided to continue creating that dark drone music under the new name of Ɛɡzɪˈstɛnʃ(ə)l. Gigs and new recordings will be announced soon.
It seems it's been quite a while since I posted any new music. Not that I haven't been creating it, but there is that eternal struggle with whether the world really wants or needs to hear any new music - and more importantly why would the world want or need any new music from me? But to quote Seamus Heaney "The unwritten poem is always going to be entangled with your own business, part of your accident and incoherence - which is what drives you to write. But once the poem gets written, it is, in a manner of speaking, none of your business." So it's the writing and creating of this music which is a work that needs to be done, but once it's recorded it seems the rest of it is none of my business.. Laying aside that burden of nihilism I've resumed uploading some recently recorded music. Some older material should see the light of day soon also..
“The universe cannot be read until we have learnt the language and become familiar with the characters in which it is written. It is written in mathematical language, and the letters are triangles, circles and other geometrical figures, without which means it is humanly impossible to comprehend a single word. Without these, one is wandering about in a dark labyrinth."
- Marcus du Sautoy
“Henry Corbin was a partisan of the freedom of the Imagination and an implacable enemy of fundamentalism and totalitarianism's of all kinds. He stands as a champion of the individual human spirit against the power of social institutions of every sort—religious, political, academic. His work provides us with an example of how we might live the Mosaic prohibition against idolatry. Every time we find a new truth, cling to a new fashion, believe in a new idea, a new savior—whether in science, in art, in politics, in the life of the mind, or in religion—we erect a new idol. Corbin’s entire metaphysics denies us the false security of putting faith in anything fixed and immobile. The Imagination never stops.”
“Problems that remain persistently insoluble should always be suspected as questions asked in the wrong way.” - Alan W. Watts
Shamanic Divination is defined as the art of seeing and interpreting signs in the world around us. In it's original form it was a way of searching for answers to those spiritual/existential questions which seem to have plagued mankind ever since we crawled out of that primordial gloop. As we look back at it now these ancient forms of soul-searching, meditation or self-reflection have long been decried as pseudo-scientific, and have mainly been reduced to parlour games such as fortune telling, or become systems for any number of easy-answer offering, self-help guru.
I would have to disagree with Fox Mulder when he says "The truth is out there". The only truth is to be found within us, and perhaps the more people who become aware of this the less reliance we may have on the psychiatric or psychological crutches of our post-modern age. It is not too much of a stretch to claim that the gradual erosion of self-awareness and imagination suits the power system with which the world finds itself. Now I don't believe in any sort of secret world government or illuminati conspiracies. We got to this place through a slow cultural and social evolution, a blind transfiguration from age to age, the wax and wane of struggles between disparate groups and ideologies. Rampant capitalism, corporate greed, depletion of natural resources, climate change; these are just a few of the issues we have found ourselves facing and as the recent results of the Paris Climate Change Conference shows us, at this point in time we cannot reach a consensus on positive and meaningful action in the face of an apparent and imminent crisis. Instead we get the usual political response of non-binding commitments and a lack of enforcement mechanisms.
And here today in 2016 there is still the prevalent belief that the world is how it is because that is the way it was made, because that is the way it has always been, the way it is supposed to be. This of course is a fallacy, but we as a species seem to lack the collective imagination to actually take control of the ship and steer it onto our desired path.
Geōmanteía is inspired by the art of casting rocks and earth and the reading of signs in placements and alignments. So to paraphrase Fox Mulder, "The signs are out there"... We just need to re-learn how to read them.
“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern.” - William Blake
